Who is Bike Safe

  • Ian Leggett - Chair (trustee)

Ian Leggett lives in Farmoor and has cycled along the B4044 for many years. He sees cycling as a form of daily transport, rather than a sport - but he also drives, walks and uses public transport. He was a founder member of Bike Safe and has been Chair since it was established. Ian has spent his life working in the charity sector, mostly supporting education and development work in East Africa.

  • Mike Chippendale - Treasurer (trustee)

Mike has lived in Botley for many years and has been volunteering with Bike Safe since 2016. He has been treasurer for several years. Mike believes passionately in the importance of integrating cycling into daily life on the Dutch model. Cycling should be an easy and safe choice for as many people as possible. In order to make this a reality, we need a high quality integrated cycle network with the B4044 being a key part of this. Mike has been able to commute by bike for almost all of his working life. Experience shows that you don't get caught in the rain that often!

  • Christine Collin (trustee)

A medical background in brain injury led Christine to be a passionate advocate for segregated cycle paths to prevent injuries, and by providing attractive facilities for safe cycling at all ages, to improve health and the environment. Christine began cycling at the age of 7 when “santa claus” left her the most exciting present ever, her own red bike, and she had the freedom to roam the local footpaths. Christine’s next bike cost her 50p in today’s money and allowed her an extra 20 minutes in bed before lectures began at medical school. The next foray into cycling has never stopped; Christine and her husband began cycle camping holidays in France with their four children in the ’80s, and they have continued, sometimes now with grandchildren, to explore new horizons in the UK and in many other countries, though they have just about given up on camping. They would not ride the B4044 as it is now in the 2020s, though they did, with their children in the 1980s. Christine believes the path must be built.

  • John Blackie (trustee)

John Blackie joined Bike Safe and the campaign to get a shared use path built along the B4044 Botley to Eynsham via Farmoor (aka the Toll Bridge road) in late 2013 and was elected a trustee of the charity in 2016. He took on events organising including 3 sponsored London Night Rides. It was the funds raised by these three rides which put the campaign onto a sound financial footing. In addition, he set up stands at every local outdoor event in 2014 and 2015 to help promote the B4044 path campaign. More recently he has stood down from the Action Group but remains a trustee.

  • John Griffin

    John Griffin (trustee)

John Griffin is a retired Architect and Town Planner. He has been involved in promoting a cycle path since moving to Farmoor and having his cycling constrained by the dangers of the B4044. John has been involved in the struggle to create a cycle path since 2010 when he wrote to Cumnor Parish Council setting out the dangers of the road for cyclists and asking for supporters of a cycle path to write to their Parish, District and County councillors in an attempt to get some action on building a proper path. We are still working on it.

  • Rosalind Kent

Rosalind is a founder member of Bike Safe ,and founder of ‘GreenTEA’ the local climate group.

She is most concerned about global warming and sees cycling as a major contributor to reducing fossil fuels, quite apart from its health, community and social benefits!

  • Harriet Rutter

Hattie is secondary school teacher and a believer in the joy and health benefits of riding a bike. She cycles to work everyday rain or shine. She is sometimes seen shouting at buses or cars when they dangerously encroach on vulnerable road users. A cycle path to Eynsham would open up more touring routes because she’s currently scared of cycling on the B4044.

  • Mark Spragg

Mark is a keen recreational cyclist and regularly cycles into Oxford and Eynsham to keep himself fit, avoid the traffic in Oxford, and to do his bit towards reducing pollution around the city. He has cycled abroad in countries such as the Netherlands, Denmark and France where cycling is much safer and more fun. It is his experience of such countries and the fact that he sees so many cyclists every day on the B4044, followed by lines of traffic, that made him want to get involved in fighting for a cycle path between Eynsham and Botley. His aim is to provide a path that can be used by cyclists and pedestrians alike, that will make cycling and walking safe, benefit traffic flow, the environment and people's well being by encouraging active travel.

  • Tiny van der Velde

Tiny was born in the Netherlands and started cycling from the age of four. She loves living in the UK but misses safe cycling terribly. Every time she cycles on the B4044 she’s glad when she has arrived home in one piece. Oxford is only a 20 minute bike ride away (no hills either!) but it sometimes feels an unreachable city.

In her spare time, Tiny likes to crochet and decorate bikes. You may have spotted some along the B4044.

  • Maarten Hardenbroek

Maarten lives in Eynsham and used to cycle the B4044 on his daily commute. Although no longer commuting to Oxford, he still helps out with sending around emails for the campaign.

Our trustees are volunteers that live along the B4044, either in Eynsham, Farmoor, Cumnor or Botley.

Trustees are elected at our Annual General Meeting each autumn.

We are always keen to hear from people who might like to become more involved.
